457th Fighter Squadron
Maj. Malcolm "Muddy" Watters followed by
Capt. Daun G. Anthony was in command of the Squadron
Capt Abner Aust obtained Ace status & was the last fighter Ace of WWII -
458th Fighter Squadron Major Harrison E. Shipman
was the units first CO
Squadron downed 22 enemy planes in aerial combat
(highest scoring squadron for the 506th) -
462nd Constituted in Oct 1944 at Lakeland Army Airfield in Florida
The 462nd was one of the cornerstone units in the
506th Fighter Group
Major Tom DeJarnette commanded the squadron for V.L.R.very long range escort operations
DeJarnette was a veteran of early Southwest Pacific air action -
